The beginning of modern historiography in South Africa is set to 6 April 1652, when the Dutchman Jan van Riebeeck on behalf of the Dutch East India Company (Dutch Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC) established a supply station at the Cape of Good Hope. The Cape Dutch brought many slaves from Indonesia, Madagascar and India into the country. Beginning of the year 1743 the number of slaves in the province was significantly higher than that of European settlers.
