Jacinto Benavente y Martínez (1866-1954) was a Spanish playwright and journalist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922. He is considered the founder of modern Spanish theatre.

Los intereses creados (1907), a skilful combination of satire and humour, the culmination of his innovative art. In it, the characters of the Italian commedia dell’arte are set in motion, with Spanish psychology, and a subtle and perceptive critique is made of the prevailing positivism of contemporary society. The play was so enthusiastically received that its author was carried home on the shoulders of an enthusiastic audience at the end of its performance at the Teatro Lara in Madrid.
