Charles I (1600 – 1649) from the House of Stuart was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 to 1649. His attempts to introduce a uniform ecclesiastical constitution in England and Scotland and to govern without a parliament in the spirit of absolutism triggered the English Civil War, which ended with Charles’ execution and the temporary abolition of the monarchy.
