French silk design fabric 17th century
The fragment of cloth, to be seen in the Cluny museum and wereof our actual plate is a full reproduction, is inconsiderable; indeed, its dimensions rather fail to give us a clue to the use of the whole fabric; still we may surmise that it was of old portion of sacerdotal raiment. Its ornaments are exquisite and slightly in relief on the ground. They possess correctness and chasteness, and stand an exception in the ornamentation of this kind and of this epoch.
