Françoise de Sévigné, born in Paris on October 10, 1646 and died on August 13, 1705 in Marseille, in the district of Mazargues, countess of Grignan, was the main recipient of letters from her mother, Madame de Sévigné.

Françoise de Sévigné is the daughter of Henri, Marquis de Sévigné, a Breton gentleman and of Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sévigné (* February 5, 1626 in Paris; † April 17, 1696 at Grignan Castle, Provence), also known as Madame de Sévigné. She was baptized a few days after her birth, on October 28th.

Her mother was a member of the French nobility. As an author she became known through her letters and is considered one of the classics of French literature.

In her youth, she was celebrated for her beauty: at the Ballet des Arts in 1663, barely sixteen years old, she had the honour of dancing the first entrance with King Louis XIV, alongside Henrietta of England, the King’s sister-in-law, Mademoiselle Louise de La Vallière and Mademoiselle Françoise-Athénaïs de Mortemart.
