Michel Eyquem de Montaigne (Latin Michael Montanus; 1533-1592) was a jurist, sceptic and philosopher, humanist and founder of essay writing. As a politician attached to the Catholic faith, he had access to the influential figures of the French monarchy at the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Reformation and the incipient Counter-Reformation.
