Godparent is an honorary office in various denominations of Christianity. The godfather or godmother accompanies or carries the baptised person at the baptism and is a witness to the administration of the sacrament. Godparents are to support the parents in the Christian upbringing of the godchild. The names of the godparents are recorded in the church register.
