Japan. Tattooed postman, 19th c.

TATTOOED POSTMAN.

The art of tattooing is carried to great perfection in Japan and receives patronage from foreigners as well as natives.

The mail carrier in the country districts of today, is sometimes clad in this picturesque but unsubstantial attire which in ancient times was regarded with universal favour.

The packet containing the mail is attached to the end of a bamboo pole and carried on the shoulder.
