The king’s guard. Sergeant in armor. 1560 to 1600.
The Company of Chevaux-légers, so called to distinguish it from the heavy cavalry (cavalerie lourde) the gendarmes of the Guard, was built by King Henri III. de Navarre, who was Henry IV. King of France from 1589, in the last years of the Huguenot war.
The household troops of the King of France (Maison militaire du roi de France) were the Guard troops of the Ancien Régime.
