A maid is a female member of the household, and the female counterpart of the servant. In the peasant sector, a distinction was made between the maids and the small maid on several farms. Originally meant Maid an unmarried (young) woman, compare the attribute “the pure maid” for the Virgin Mary; correspondingly, maid in the upscale language to the twentieth century meant virginity.
