German Costume and Heraldic Art

German Costume and Heraldic Art, 16th century.

These two plates, interesting for the information given by them on Costume and Heraldic Art, are drawn from a collection of engravings etched on sheet-iron. We are indebted for them to the goldsmith Kaler`s rustic print; they were published in Nuremberg towerds the middle of the 16th century. The Italien-French influence is remarkable by the presence of the doublets and slashed small clothes from the time of the Italian war ( Charles VIII. ) The allusive arms in the shields, similar to those of the crests, recall the names of the two families ( Weiss-Vogel, white bird; Schlüssel, key, feld, field). –  We have interpreted freely these engravings of a barbarous aspect, so as to make them more pleasant to our readers.
